DENTAL VENEERS:
Placement of Veneers is a cosmetic dental procedure in which a thin layer of porcelain or composite material is added over the outer surface of the tooth. They are primarily used to improve esthetics of discolour or chipped off teeth. Veneers are usually done to those part of the teeth that are visible while talking or smiling.
The procedure can be direct or indirect. The direct technique usually involves placing composite resin on the outer surface of the tooth.
The indirect technique usually involves two appointments because the veneers will be fabricated at a dental laboratory. At the first appointment the teeth are prepared, impressions taken and the teeth are given a temporary covering. In about a week’s time the veneers are back from the laboratory. During the second appointment the temporaries are removed and the veneers are bonded to the teeth.
The laboratory fabricated veneers are made using porcelain or pressed ceramic and are very esthetic.
The advantage of veneers Vs crown is that much less tooth material is sacrificed however veneers are not recommended for teeth that have large fillings or little tooth surface.

TOOTH WHITENING (DENTAL BLEACHING):
Tooth whitening or Dental bleaching is a common cosmetic procedure which involves either restoring the natural tooth shade or whitening of teeth beyond their natural shade.
Teeth are comprised of an outer enamel layer and an inner dentine layer. The colour of teeth is created by the reflection and scattering of light off the enamel, combined with the colour of the dentin under it.
Teeth may be discoloured by a build-up of surface stains. Over the enamel (extrinsic staining) which hides the natural tooth colour and makes you smile dull. Tooth stains can also develop due to actual ch anges in the dentinal layer below the enamel (Intrinsic staining). Some people develop stains due to combination of both the factors.
Extrinsic Teeth Stains: An extrinsic tooth stain is staining on the surface of the tooth. Every day, a thin protein layer (pellicle) builds-up on the on the enamel surface and picks up stains. Tooth enamel also contains pores that can hold stains from foods and drinks like colas, tea, coffee, red wine, turmeric, soya sauce etc. Use of cigarettes or other tobacco produces also leads to discolouration of teeth. Poor oral hygiene such as inadequate brushing or flossing can leads to build-up of stains. Prolonged use of chlorhexidine containing mouth wash may also lead to staining of teeth.
Intrinsic Teeth Stains: An intrinsic tooth stain is present much deeper in the tooth. Intrinsic stains can be caused by intake of too much fluoride (fluorosis) as a child while teeth are developing. Certain medication may alter the colour of dentin and stain the enamel. Children below 8yrs of age who are on antibiotics like tetracycline and doxycycline are known to experience permanent dentin discolouration. Use of drugs like antihistamines, antipsychotic drugs, antihypertensive drugs or chemotherapy are also known to discolour teeth. Trauma to adult tooth may also darken it. Aging makes teeth less bright as the enamel gets thinner and the dentin becomes darker.
Regardless of the type of tooth discolouration, there are a number of options to help you achieve a beautiful smile.
Teeth whitening is a popular procedure to make your teeth whiter and brighter and therefore more attractive. Bleaching can be carried out most effectively on extrinsic stains to whiten the stained and discoloured teeth, or simply to enhance a dull smile.
Intrinsic stains usually can’t be treated by regular teeth whitening procedures and there stains need to the covered up. This can be accomplished through use of dental veneers or dental crowns.
Our dental office offers two methods of teeth whitening:
In-office whitening: This procedure is called chairside bleaching and usually requires only one visit. Before this procedures prophylactic cleaning of teeth is done to remove plaque and debris, next a protective barrier is applied on to the gums to protect against any irritation caused by bleaching gel. After this a peroxide based bleaching gel is applied on the surface of the teeth and left for 15-20 minutes. Usually two applications are carried out each lasting for 15-20 minutes. The entire process may take 40-45 minutes. After this the gel is suctioned and washed off and you will be able to see the results immediately. Those patients who have stubborn tooth stains may be advised to return for one or more additional teeth bleaching sessions or may be asked to continue with a home-use teeth whitening kit.
Home bleaching method: This method involves having impression taken from which laboratory fabricated custom tray is made. Then, a supply of whitening gel is provided to the patient, which is placed in there trays and the patient is advised to wear the tray with gel for a few hours or overnight. The entire process may take a few days to a few weeks until acceptable results we achieved. Sensitivity of teeth is normal side effect of this whitening method but it is transitional. This may be a preferred option if you wish to whiten your teeth gradually in the comfort of your own home. Either way, tooth whitening is a safe and painless procedure ideal for most patients.

DIASTEMA CLOSURE (CLOSURE OF GAP BETWEEN TEETH):
What is diastema?
A diastema is an area of extra space between teeth. Midline diastema is the space which is present in between two upper front teeth.
Possible causes of diastema:
Tooth size discrepancy
Missing teeth
Overextension of labial frenum: Labial frenum is the tissue which extends from inner portion of upper lip to the gum tissue present between two upper front teeth.
Malalignment of teeth
Diastema usually cause no complications to your dental health, but many people choose diastema closure for cosmetic purposes. It is unpleasant esthetically and it also affect self-esteem and confidence level.
There are several methods of closing a diastema, and the use of each one depends on the cause of the problem and the amount of space that has to be closed.
Data like photographs, radiographs and bite is recorded to formulate and analyze each treatment option available for you.
Treatment options:
Tooth coloured filling: For small gaps, closure can be achieved with composite resins.
Porcelain veneers: Veneers are wafer-thin, custom-made shells of tooth-colored materials designed to cover the front surface of teeth to improve appearance. They are bonded to the teeth surface hence changing their color, shape, size, or length and achieve closure of gaps.
Orthodontic treatment (Dental Braces or clear aligners): Most diastema require a full set of dental braces and retainer therapy, as moving one tooth can affect the placement of the rest.

Tooth colored fillings are filling which are used to recreate the natural appearance of teeth. Composite fillings are available to closely match the colour and characteristics of your natural teeth. They are the solution for restoring decayed teeth, making cosmetic improvement, changing the colour of your teeth or even rebuilding of teeth that are broken or worn out. They can be used to close minor gaps between your front teeth and to reshape crooked teeth.
Composite resin fillings can be placed in the back teeth as well as front teeth. In general a tooth that is going to have a composite resin filling requires less preparation when compared to a silver or amalgam filling. Also as oppose to traditional amalgam filling, these fillings do not contain mercury and they do not discolour the teeth.
