ENDODONTIC AND COSERVATIVE DENTISTRY
ROOT CANAL TREATMENT (R.C.T.):
Every tooth consists of three different layers. The outermost and hardest layer is enamel, and the second layer is dentin. The third and inner most layer is the pulp space where the nerve, blood vessels and other cells are located.
Patients need R.C.T. when there is inflammation or infection of the pulp space. If the pulp space is exposed to the external environment, the tissue becomes contaminated, inflamed and eventually infected. The pulp exposure can happen in many circumstances like: in a large cavity (carious tooth) or a fractured tooth. Root Canal Treatment is normally performed under Local Anesthesia (L.A.). During Root canal treatment the dentist makes a small access hole to reach inside the pulp space and removes the infected dead tissue. Thereafter the space is disinfected, shaped and sealed with special materials. Treatment usually takes a single sitting but if there is infection, pus or if the canals are curved or blocked, additional appointments may be required.
The patient will no longer feel any pain in Root Canal treated tooth as the tooth is non vital (dead). This makes the tooth brittle and prone to fracture, so a crown is advised to be placed over this tooth. Treatment usually takes only one appointment, but if there are curved canals, multiple canals or there is infection/ pus, additional appointments may be required.
When there is an acute inflammation/infection with no pus accumulation in the tooth then R.C.T. can be completed in a single sitting.
DENTAL FILLINGS:
A Dental filling is a way to restore a damaged or decayed tooth back to its normal form and function. During this procedure the decayed portion of the tooth is removed and a clean cavity is prepared. After this cavity is filled with a filling material to prevent re-entry of bacteria causing decay.
Fillings are also used to repair cracked or broken teeth and teeth that have been worn down due to misuse (such as nail-biting or teeth grinding).
A variety of filling materials are available like Silver Amalgam (an alloy of Hg, Ag, Cu, Sn and Zn), Composite resins (tooth-coloured filling), Glass Ionomer Cement (G.I.C.), Gold and Porcelain etc.
The Dentist's recommendation will help you determine, which filling is best for you.
